Background:
SCADA, short for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, is an industrial control system designed to monitor factory and plant operations either on-site or from a remote location. A SCADA system is made up of both hardware devices (Industrial computer) and SCADA software that allow a user to control and monitor operations. A SCADA system can collect, monitor, and analyze data coming from a plant or factory in real-time, allowing workers to monitor and control operations with greater visibility.
With a SCADA system in place, human operators can control valves, pumps, motors, sensors, and any other instrument within a process using an automated system that saves time. Project Description
The most basic SCADA system is a graphical user interface (GUI) connected to PLCs within a manufacturing plant or factory. Most SCADA architectures consist of HMI (Human-Machine-Interface) which communicate with mass of devices. With a SCADA system, the need for on-site operator is greatly reduced, and the operator who are working on-site can focus on the most important tasks. Data can be collected and gathered automatically and subsequently sent to a central HMI.
As a type of HMI system, Industrial Panel PCs serve as the master and satellite computer stations which allow an on-site operator to analyze all the collected data from networked devices and sensors. The information is often displayed in graphical pictures and maps representing machines and devices, data charts, and performance reports. The communications network is what allows data to be sent between the machines, PLCs, and operators. SCADA systems typically use a closed LAN for local geographical areas, or WANs to connect to different regions. Without a correctly designed communication network, a SCADA system would not be able to function.
